New York CNN —Jon Stewart on “The Daily Show” Monday revealed what led to his abrupt exit from Apple and the cancellation of his short-lived show on its streaming TV platform. Stewart said that the tech giant prohibited from discussing artificial intelligence or interviewing Federal Trade Commission chair Lina Khan. Stewart and Khan discussed Big Tech monopolies, after the US Justice Department and more than a dozen states sued Apple last week in a blockbuster antitrust lawsuit that accused Apple of illegally monopolizing the smartphone market. Stewart said he had his own issues with Apple, telling Khan that he wanted to have her on the TV show’s companion podcast and “Apple asked us not do it.”“They literally said ‘please don’t talk to her,’” Stewart said. “The Problem with Jon Stewart” ran for two seasons from 2021 to 2023 on Apple TV+.

Danny Frenkel, the CEO of comedy startup PunchUp Live, said the industry had a pretty standard path to success. Comics would aim to score a special on Comedy Central, Netflix, or HBO to become a big headliner at large venues. But Frenkel said the problem was comedians were '"renting" those audiences from social-media platforms. PunchUp helps comedians navigate social-media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. US President Joe Biden speaks at a campaign event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 8, 2024. An estimated 32.2 million people watched Biden's State of the Union speech, according to Nielsen ratings from 14 television networks. Biden campaign officials said they expect an extremely close race against Trump with opinion polls showing a neck-and-neck race for the 270 electoral votes necessary for victory. Polls show Biden, 81, and Trump, 77, closely matched, with most voters unenthusiastic about the rematch after Biden defeated Trump four years ago. Deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty said the $30 million ad buy over the next six weeks is more than the Biden campaign spent in all of 2023.

The Democratic Taboo

The Democratic Party has had no shortage of argument and dissent over the years. Internal battles and backbiting are part of what it means to be a modern-day Democrat. This has played out on platforms large and small, most recently after Jon Stewart, on his return to his former Comedy Central show after a nine-year hiatus, mocked the “objectively old” President Biden. “Please make it another nine years,” Keith Olbermann, the former MSNBC host, said on X. Prominent Democratic strategists like David Axelrod and James Carville who criticize Biden are facing a barrage of pushback on social media and from the White House — and sometimes, reportedly, from Biden himself.

Discovery is delaying "Last Week Tonight" YouTube streaming to push viewers to Max. Every Sunday night, John Oliver hosts "Last Week Tonight" on cable TV. When it plays on YouTube, where HBO runs it without ads, it doesn't make any money. So hoping that making "Last Week Tonight" a little harder to see for free fits pretty easily into that pattern. AdvertisementThe move also runs counter to the way TV networks are treating comedy #content in general.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. “In his courageous and too short life,” wrote Russia scholar Daniel Treisman, “Navalny became a symbol of hope for the younger generations of his compatriots. “He never gave up on the prospect of what he called ‘the beautiful Russia of the future,’” Treisman noted. “For a ‘beautiful Russia of the future’ to emerge in coming years, Putin must lose the war he started. “Why am I back?” asked Jon Stewart, returning to “The Daily Show” chair as Monday night host after leaving the program in 2015. He was there in part because Comedy Central ended a yearlong search unable to pick a full-time replacement for Trevor Noah. He was there because his Apple TV+ show “The Problem” ended, after Apple discovered that when you hire a famous political comedian, he’ll want to talk about topics that upset people. His timing was so sharp, his comic exasperation so familiar, you’d think he’d been away for a long weekend instead of more than two presidential terms. Now he was back to tell us that the two likely candidates for president are super, super old.

Yet it almost felt that way during Stewart's return to “The Daily Show” Monday night. Neither will that night prove Stewart can regain the position of prominence he stepped away from in August 2015. He moved swiftly into the news, and up-to-date doings of President Joe Biden and his Republican rival. “The Daily Show” even found one where Trump said he couldn't remember talking about how good his memory is. The “campaign” interlude allowed Stewart, and viewers who had drifted away from “The Daily Show” after he left, to become acquainted with unfamiliar cast members.

Paramount, the owner of TV networks like Nickelodeon, MTV and Comedy Central, is laying off hundreds of employees, cutting costs as it continues its painful transition away from traditional television. About 3 percent of the company’s roughly 24,500 employees will be affected by the layoffs, according to a person familiar with the cuts, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive corporate information. Bob Bakish, Paramount’s chief executive, said in a memo to employees that the cuts were part of a bid to “return the company to earnings growth.”“While I realize these changes are in no way easy, as I said last month, I am confident this is the right decision for our future,” Mr. Bakish wrote. “These adjustments will help enable us to build on our momentum and execute our strategic vision for the year ahead — and I firmly believe we have much to be excited about.”
